Ring Engraving Guide: History, creative ideas & 2024 cost

Ring engravings are a very sweet way of creating lasting symbols of your love with your wedding bands or engagement rings.

Couples who go for engravings always end up with unique rings that remind them of something special that resonates with their journey together.

Wedding ring engravings can say anything you want them to say, but usually, they are certain inscriptions that hold sentimental meanings. Continue reading to find the best ideas for wedding ring engravings in 2024.

Why Ring Engraving is a Timeless Tradition

Ancient Roman and Greek people started using wedding rings as dowries (valuable gifts) for their beloved and saw them as a sign of fidelity (Wikipedia). It makes sense that someone decided to go for a touch of personalization along the way.

For example, 17th-century wedding rings, called “poesie” rings, commonly had poems engraved around them (The London-Victorian Ring). French or Latin romantic expressions were also common among medieval engraved wedding rings. You can still find authentic poesie rings from this period in certain museums.

Since the Second World War, men also started wearing wedding rings. Far away on the frontlines, a few precious words wrapped around their vein of love were all they had as reminders of their dear beloveds.

Modern couples still welcome the tradition of engraving wedding rings with creative and unique phrases or signs that symbolize their love and commitment.

Let’s look at popular ideas that can express emotions, valuable meanings, and the depth of your love story.

Popular Creative Wedding Ring Engraving Ideas

As we said, poems and romantic inscriptions were the most common engravings on wedding rings throughout history.

However, there are lots of other creative ideas that can resemble the uniqueness of your relationship. Here are some creative ideas you can use:

Names and Initials

The classic wedding ring engravings use the couple’s names or initials. This engraving signifies the commitment and love you have for each other.

You can also use cheeky nicknames you have for each other, and nobody knows about. You can even put the initials of your dear children if you have any.

Special Dates

Consider engraving the most significant milestones in your relationship journey on your wedding rings. It can be the day you first met, got engaged, or your wedding day!

Don’t forget the date of the first time you expressed your love for each other.

Although it seems simple, this profound choice evokes the loving memories you made and now cherish every time you glance at your wedding ring.

Meaningful Phrases or Quotes

This category provides a vast array of options you can choose from.

You can consider short phrases or quotes as simple and deep as “I Love You,” “Forever in My Heart,” or “Always Together,” or as personal as something that resonates only with the two of you.

You can use writings from different languages so that only you two know their meanings. Or if both of you have a good sense of humor, try going for fun ideas that bring a smile to your lips every time you read them, something like “Challenge Accepted,” “Contractually Yours,” or “Put Me Back On.”

There are other sentimental choices you may like. Maybe a poem, a verse of the all-time favorite song you share, or a personal motto that is the foundation for your relationship; “Growth for Both!”
Another fun and creative idea for making your wedding ring engravings special is to split a saying you cherish between your rings. This type of cute and personal engraving symbolizes the fact that you and your partner complete each other.

You can even choose to engrave religious quotes that are held dear for both of you.

Symbols and Coordinates

If you’re looking for maximum uniqueness, this one is for you! You can look for ideas everywhere: symbols of birth months, hearts, infinity signs, or the signs for your shared interests.

You can also engrave the coordinates of a place that represents cheerful memories, such as where you first met or where they said YES!

How to Choose the Right Engraving for Your Ring

There are two ways to approach this question: choosing the right wedding ring for your selected engraving or choosing the right engraving for the perfect wedding ring you have chosen.

Some couples are so dedicated to having certain engravings on their rings that they give up their favorite choice of wedding rings in return for larger ones that can embrace the engraving.

However, most often, this is not the case!

Selecting the perfect engraving requires time, thoughtfulness, and dedication, as fixing it again is very time-consuming and costly.

First, use the ideas in the last section to find what symbolizes your relationship. Is it a shared experience, a favorite quote, or something representing your love for each other?

Then, consider the size of your rings. Smaller rings can accommodate shorter engravings, like initials and dates, inside themselves. Wider bands, on the other hand, can accommodate more engravings.

Lastly, don’t forget about your favorite font. Vintage-style wedding rings look better with elegant script, while sans-serif can convey a more modern feel to your wedding ring.

Let’s look deeper at the different fonts and styles of engraving in wedding rings.

Engraving Fonts and Styles

Like every other thing about marriage, the font of the engravings on your rings should be according to your desires. After all, it’s your magical ceremony. You can use Anglo-Saxon Runes, Old London, or even Elvish; “Two Rings to Rule Them All!”

However, before making the final decision about the font, make sure your jeweler can handle it.

There are lots of font options you can choose from, but here are the five most common jewelry engraving fonts you can consider:

Basic Jewelry Engraving Fonts

Script and block are the two most common choices jewelers provide. The crisp, clear, and simple block font is easier to read. On the other hand, the script is great for romantic and graceful inscriptions. These fonts usually look best on traditional or vintage-style wedding rings.

Script and Block Font Varieties

Some jewelers can offer more than just two fonts. They provide you with four to five distinct script alternatives and block options for capital and lowercase letters.

Modern Sans-Serif

This font looks clean and modern, which goes perfectly with minimalist and modern rings. They are easy on the eyes and accompany simple designs nicely.

Typewriter Style

This font works great if you’re up for a nostalgic touch! It beautifully mimics the look of old typewriters and is suitable for vintage-loving couples.

Monograms

The rise of signet rings has brought with it the antique-inspired style of monograms. Monograms are, in fact, fancy initial engravings, and they have a variety of complex typeface styles.

Different Language Fonts

As mentioned before, you can use other languages for engraving. Consult a language expert and your jeweler; these engravings need additional care to get the details right.

Custom Fonts

For jewelers that use laser engraving equipment, it’s possible to etch in a particular font you found online. Since most jewelers lack this capacity, it is highly challenging to find bespoke typeface work.

It is worth noting that the font of your wedding ring engraving should be relatable to the ring’s style and material. Some fonts look better on gold, while others on platinum or silver.

What Metals Work Best for Engraving?

You can make an informed decision when you know you can’t trust all metals for engraving. Here are common metals used for engraving:

Gold

Both yellow gold and white gold have been the first choice of many couples. Gold’s softness allows for the right amount of details.

Platinum

The next best option after gold is the durable and resistant platinum wedding ring, which works great for deep and crisp engravings that can last for ages.

Silver

Couples on tighter budgets choose sterling silver, which is okay for engraving but needs more frequent maintenance.

Metals to Approach with Caution

Tungsten

This metal’s durability is why it’s not a suitable option, as it is very hard to engrave. Consult with a professional to ensure the best results.

Titanium

Titanium can also be challenging to engrave, unless with specialized tools.

How Much Does Ring Engraving Cost?

Several factors can influence the price of engraving your wedding or engagement ring.

Length of the Message

The shorter the engraving message, the cheaper it is. For example, initials and dates can cost around $30 to $100, while longer engravings can range from $100 to $300.

Font Style

Intricate fonts with small details are more expensive, while standard fonts are usually included in the base price.

Type of Metal

The price of the ring’s metal is a whole different factor you must consider. For example, engraving on platinum may be more expensive than gold due to its complexity.

Symbols and Custom Designs

Custom elements and symbols drive the price of wedding ring engraving higher; you can expect numbers between $50 and $150.

Engraving Method

The engraving method is one of the essential factors in the price of engraving. Hand engravings are generally more expensive due to the required craftsmanship, while machine engravings can be much more affordable.

Overall, the wedding ring engraving can range from $30 to $500, depending on your options.

DIY vs. Professional Ring Engraving: Which is Right for You?

Although we do not recommend engraving your rings with a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) approach, it has certain benefits. For example, it is much more cost-effective since DIY engraving kits are cheaper than professional services.

DIY engraving is much more personal and can reflect your creativity and effort.

However, DIY engraving may not match the quality of a professional jeweler’s work, in addition to the fact that it is much riskier in the way that it can damage the ring.

DIY engraving is also more susceptible to wearing down over time, compromising the engraving message’s legibility.

It is recommended to invest in professional engraving services for peace of mind.

How to Care for Your Engraved Ring

Wedding bands are significant pieces that require constant maintenance to ensure their engravings remain legible over time. Here are ring maintenance tips for better protection:

Regular cleaning

you can use a soft cloth and mild soap to clean out the oils and dirt. Avoid harsh materials, as they can damage the metal and the engravings.

Avoid Abrasive Materials:

Be cautious of materials that can scratch the surface of the ring and wear down the engraving.

Storage

Always store your ring in a soft pouch or a dedicated jewelry box. Avoid leaving them around, as they can easily get damaged.

Re-engraving options

You can always consult professional jewelers about restoring the original engraving or even creating a new one.

4 Things to Know About Ring Engraving

In conclusion, there are four important factors regarding wedding ring engravings that you have to know about.

Not all metals are equal

Different metals have different characteristics. Some are softer and can be engraved more easily, like gold and silver. Some metals are harder and may need special tools. Always discuss the metals you want to engrave with your jeweler.

Space is limited

You should think about what you want to engrave on your wedding ring. The size and width of your ring will define the available space for engraving. Consider your options carefully, and look for the engraving text that fits comfortably within your ring.

Font choice matter

Different styles and fonts of engravings go with different shapes and styles of rings. Find what works best for you and your partner.

Engraving is permanent

Remember that these engravings are permanent. Be sure about the message, as it cannot be easily removed or altered.

In conclusion, personalized, meaningful ring engravings are unique expressions of love for your significant other.

Consider all the options for materials, engraving ideas, and prices outlined in this complete guide before making a decision to ensure your ring remains a treasured symbol of your journey together for the years to come.

I was shopping for a 40th wedding anniversary ring for my wife late last year and I am so glad that I came across DiamondNet. I had a great experience getting the ring from Felix. He is an impressive guy to work with. Very professional, knowledgeable with amazing customer service skills. I am a bit fussy customer and Felix was extremely patient, kind and knowledgeable during the entire process of choosing the diamond and the ring design. He delivered just what I had imagined, beautiful diamond ring. It was such a positive experience that, just recently, I returned to Felix in search of earrings. And again, he did not disappoint. Highly recommended! Thank you Felix.

I’m extremely disappointed with my experience with DiamondNet and their so-called "personalized" wedding band service. We initially ordered a custom-designed ring with the assurance that we could exchange or return it if we weren’t satisfied. Unfortunately, the design they delivered the first time wasn’t what we had envisioned, so we exchanged it, hoping they would get it right on the second attempt. To our dismay, the second ring still wasn’t what we expected. When I reached out to ask for the first ring back (since it was better than the second), they suddenly changed their tune and refused to exchange it, citing a policy against returns or exchanges for personalized designs. This was despite the fact that they had already accepted an exchange for the first ring because they acknowledged it didn’t match our design. When I pointed out this inconsistency and provided pictures of the design I had worked on with their designer, clearly showing that they understood what we wanted but failed to execute it, they still refused to accommodate us. To make matters worse, their tone was not respectful throughout the entire process, and they outright refused to speak to me over the phone, making the situation even more frustrating. Instead, they tried to penalize me with extra charges for exchanging the ring again, knowing that I preferred the first one over the second. If you’re looking for a company to create a personalized design, I strongly advise against choosing DiamondNet. They couldn’t deliver what we wanted, and their customer service was not only unprofessional but also disrespectful. Save yourself the headache and go elsewhere.

My fiancé and I were shopping for rings late last year and it was a very overwhelming experience. My friend told me about Felix, and after hearing how highly recommended he was, jumped at the chance to make an appointment. Upon our first meeting, Felix was very knowledge and made the process very stress free. Less than a month later my ring was done, and I'm absolutely in love with it! I 100% would recommend anyone looking for an engagement ring or any jewelry to contact Felix.

Felix was a game changer for my fiancé and I. We had been looking at rings for a couple months before finding Felix. Store front after store front (Janinas, Raffis, Peoples, Tiffany's ect) would often give us the same generic rhetoric about how they have the nicest diamonds, cuts and best deals (a couple stores just looked at us and assumed we weren't worth their time and were rude and short)I get it, that's the game they're in, but if you didn't know this other avenue exists, I can guarantee you, you were swindled out of thousands of dollars and sold short of a really wonderful experience finding the perfect ring. After hearing about the wholesale avenue, we met with a couple of dealers - Felix stood out! He has a very calming energy to him and was very knowledgeable. We never felt like he didn't have the time for us, or that our ignorant questions were below him. He took the time to hear our love story and needs with the ring and gave us many options to work with. We went back and forth for a month as he tweaked the ring via computer models until we were satisfied. This was our biggest purchase to date as a couple and we were probably high maintenance with our requests, but again, I never got the feeling Felix was getting frustrated with us. I was over the moon when I first saw the ring. Nothing in the stores came even close to how nice this ring turned out! It was perfect in my eyes but of course I’m not the one wearing it. I proposed to my fiancé a couple weeks later and she too was over the moon as I swear she spent more time looking at it then me haha (I kid, sort of lol). The ring is truly more than we could have ever of hoped for and I know this review is long, but I can’t state enough how happy we are. I didn’t think I cared about diamonds as much as I do, but after this experience I am now getting one myself for our wedding day too. Thank you Felix, you made an exhausting and frustrating experience, the exact opposite for us 😊

We highly recommend DiamondNet! Thank you Felix.
